Chamonix 2006 Mineral Show

Chamonix mineral show has reached the 39th edition and has been held as usual on August 4-5th at the Sport Center.

Webminerals this year has partecipated for the 3rd time as exibitor, and this has been again a very intersting experience.

General view of the show Mt.Blanc

This show is small, 35-40 exibitors, entirely reserved to minerals and it is very interesting for the high quality level of the specimen presented (in fact several important French dealers are present). As usual the visit to Chamonix show is devoted to admire Alpine minerals, to look for pink fluorite and to meet all the most famous cristallier of the area.

Visitors were quite numerous with a good number of french, swiss and italian collectors; there has been a large numbers of tourist and many of them interested to crystals. It rained on saturday all day long, so we had a real crowd of people entering the show.

This year the Chamonix mineral club has presented a large selection of French minerals, taken from private collections and from the new Crystal Museum of Chamonix which has been recently opened in the center of the city (see our report)

We saw many interesting new findings, mostly quartz and this year also some excellent pink fluorites at Mr.Charlet table. Prices were very high,as expected.

Some  dealers presented different minerals from other french and worldwide localities.

We mention Blue Fluorite from Le Burq (France), Epidote and Quartz from St.Veran (France) and a new finding of Siderite from Maroc. Also many attractive specimens from China and Brasil were shown by some of the most known French dealers.

As previous years this show has satisfied us and hence for many reasons it is  worth a trip to see it: a beautiful village and landscape, good minerals, now the Crystal Museum to visit and good French food.

This museum has been opened this year with the contribution of Chamonix Administation and with the support of the Chamonix mineral club and of many private collectors.

The aim is to present in a nice and relaxing place an excellent display of minerals with particular attention to Alpine type minerals. Part of the  area is also dedicated to cabinet size worldwide minerals specimen. The French taste of minerals display is widely present, giving great aesthetic pleasure to the visit.

The museum is organized with didactic displays, showing and explaining the formations of Alpine minerals and of minerals of interest for industry. These cases cover most of the walls of the large room, while the center is dedicated to showy specimens, either Alpine and worldwide.

Too many pieces to mention, fluorite, quartz, axinite, so many excellent to super crystals. We  present several pictures of them.

And also we like to mention the beautiful large panels showing Mt.Blanc mountain group with many large clusters of quartz crystals, and the hard and dangerous work of Crystalliers searching for quartz in difficult veins, climbing hard rocks. A profession that goes back to many centuries ago, and that was source of living for many people in France and Switzerland, sellings crystals for industry and collectors. A profession still alive here in Chamonix.

Congratulation to Chamonix and its mineral club for this interesting museum.
